Bankers Hill Parking
Just recently, Go Bankers Hill announced the addition of approximately 120 new parking spaces in the Bankers Hill neighborhood alone. These spaces are the direct result of a collaborative effort between the Uptown Community Parking District staff, the City of San Diego, and SANDAG, and represent a multi-phase of a neighborhood wide review to maximize on-street parking inventory in Bankers Hill.
Additional Parking Coming to Uptown
As an older neighborhood that was designed before the proliferation of automobiles, Bankers Hill has many unique parking needs. UCPD is working with local community partners to help balance resident and business needs, and create a unique, multi modal neighborhood that will serve as a model for San Diego as it advances into the next century.
Our most recent project involves changing parallel parking to head-in and diagonal spaces to create more parking spots. This project was part of a larger community-wide effort that utilized more than $1.1 million in reinvested revenue from local parking meters to create a better Bankers Hill for our local businesses, residents, and visitors alike. To do this, we rolled back the red curbs and utilized the classic, wide streets throughout Bankers Hill to improve direct access to many local restaurants, shops, and small businesses.
Continuing to Improve Walkability in Bankers Hill
The parking conversion project began in 2017, when UCPD announced the addition of 90 new parking spaces in the community. A big step in the process involved changing Municipal Code 86.0104, which expedited the process by removing the need for City Council to approve parking conversions. Per this council policy, UCPD staff mailed notices to the residents who lived on each block with a letter and diagram describing the proposed changes. This letter included an option to respond for residents who opposed the proposed changes.
The blocks that we converted in 2017 included several areas on Fir Street, 2nd Avenue, Curlew Street, Hawthorn and Ivy Streets, and 1st Avenue and 3rd Avenue. Each of the blocks passed the 60-day community review process, and construction was completed in 2018.
This year, the brand-new 120 new parking spaces represent a multi-phase effort of a neighborhood wide review to maximize on-street parking inventory in Bankers Hill, and we are so excited to continue working with community partners to help balance resident and business needs, and create a unique, multi-modal neighborhood that will serve as a model for San Diego.
